How secure is the RCBC Online Banking system?
The Online Banking is hosted in a secure server.
Each page you view and any information submitted on RCBC Online Banking is encrypted between the client's computer and the RCBC Online Banking server using 256-bit SSL.
It allows the server and client to authenticate each other and to negotiate an encryption algorithm and cryptographic keys before the application protocol transmits or receives its first byte of data.
Even in the highly unlikely event that the transmission is intercepted, it will not be usable to anyone.
Sensitive data is encrypted
Sensitive data such as the client's RCBC Online Banking password is encrypted using a one-way 160-bit hash cryptographic algorithm that turns an arbitrary-length input into a fixed-length binary value, and this transformation is one-way, that is, given a hash value it is statistically infeasible to recreate a document that would produce this value. Even if our password database falls into the wrong hands it would be hard for the intruder to recover user passwords. So when someone asks for passwords, neither the administrator nor the system can show them.
We take steps to make sure our internet banking system is safe and secure, and it's important that you do the same. To help you, here are the precautions you should take while banking online.
-
Keep passwords and other information safe by:
- Not writing down or storing your Internet banking password or information on your computer;
- Not sharing with anyone else access to your password or information. We will never contact you to ask you for this information - if you get an e-mail or a phone call asking for this information, a fraudster is at work;
- Changing your password immediately if you think that someone else knows it - you can do this by logging on to RCBC Online Banking and using the 'Security Settings' menu.
- Make sure your password is secure by:
Choosing a 'strong' 8 to 20-character password for Internet banking and changing it regularly. Use a mix of letters and numbers (like c4t or d0g), that you can remember without writing down. And avoid using words that may be easy for others to guess, such as the name of a family member or pet.
-
Be careful where you log on:
- We strongly advise not to use Internet banking on publicly accessible computers, in places such as Internet cafes, as they are not always secure.
- Do not choose or change your password or information from a computer in a public place.
- If you are using the RCBC Online Banking from a public place, do not leave the computer unattended while you are logged on to Internet banking, and ensure that no one is watching what you type.
- Check your accounts regularly:
Be sure to check your accounts regularly - it's a good way of spotting any suspicious transactions. If you notice anything that looks out of the ordinary, please contact immediately RCBC Customer Care at +632 8877-7222
- Check whether the web page is secure by:
Checking the first few characters of the web address in your address bar has changed from the usual 'http' to 'https' wherein the 's' stands for secure, looking for a small padlock icon, in the locked position, in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. Find out how to check whether a web page is secure.
- Check the site certificate:
Sites that are legal and secured always show a valid site certificate.
- Always logout:
Finally, always click 'Logout' when you've finished using Internet banking wherever you are, and always close your browser. This will prevent others from gaining access to your accounts online.
If you suspect that any of your RCBC accounts have been accessed online by someone other than yourself, contact RCBC Customer Care immediately at +632 8877-7222.
